Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. (James 4:13-14)
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. (Prov. 16:9)
I’m a planner. I crave the security of knowing how and when I’ll tackle the tasks and goals I have for the days ahead. Leaving things at loose ends tends to make me anxious.
Of course, my plans can be knocked off course by events. That’s a given. But I still want to have at least an outline of what tomorrow could look like, barring surprises.
The best plan I ever made was to make time with God my first order of business every morning. In the business of daily living, it’s the essential I’ve missed only when it was unavoidable. It’s my daily dose of inspiration, comfort, hope and assurance.
In this age of electronic everything, time spent with God might be categorized as E-commerce: handling the business of living by focusing on some very significant “E”s:
ETERNAL: In a world of constant change, God’s Word is eternal. It is truth, and truth doesn’t change. Perceptions may be fluid and self-serving, but His Word is firm forever, and imparts what is solid and soul-serving. It is absolutely trustworthy, a foundation which cannot be shaken.
ENLIGHTENING: God’s Word and His Spirit give us light in a dark world. They shine clearly on His love for us, His patience with us, His longing for relationship with each one of us. He invites us to come into His very presence, to seek and to find Him, to know firsthand the hope we have in Him.
ENDURING: No matter what the situation, the appearance, the threat, the derision, God’s Word endures. His truth endures. His purpose endures. His love endures. His wisdom endures. His presence endures. His power endures. His promises endure.
EMPOWERING: We have the unimaginable privilege of drawing directly on the wisdom, knowledge and power of God in every area of life. He equips us as we call on his resources. Any shortfalls are not due to His lack of offering, but to our lack of seeking.
ENFOLDING: Whatever the day may unfold, God enfolds each of His children in His arms of love. There is no safer place we could be.
Father, help us to take hold of all that we can have because we belong to you. Help us today to make some important E-trades — our Emptiness for your fulness, our Envy for your contentment, the things that Ensnare us for real freedom in you. We ask it in the precious and the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
